I occasionally teach college-level mass media and English and writing courses.
My favorite so far was the Introduction to Mass Media course I taught in 2011 at Minnesota State University, Mankato. I had 198 students. It was a delight to combine my performance and presentation skills with my expertise and deep knowledge in how various mass media is produced. The lecture on pornography was well attended.
My second favorite teaching experience was teaching fiction workshop to advanced undergraduates at St. Cloud State University in 2010. What a terrific group of students. We all learned why Han Solo is not the hero of Star Wars. (His stakes are too low; no internal motivation or yearning. What does Han Solo really want?)
I recently co-taught a humor writing course at The Loft Literary Center with Heidi Raschke called “Motherhood is a Joke: Turning your experiences as a mom into entertaining reads.”
Other higher education institutions where I’ve given lectures or classroom presentations, or been on professional panels: University of Minnesota, North Central University, Augsburg College (MFA), Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Normandale Community College, and College of St. Catherine.
Here’s an online syllabus from one of my composition classes (St. Cloud, 2009). I prefer being paperless.
